Today marks 80 years since an atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki.
It is said that the bomb was originally intended to be dropped on another city, Kokura, but due to heavy fog, the pilot was given clear orders to drop it on the next major city, Nagasaki, if Kokura was not possible. On August 9th, the bomb, named "Fat Man," was dropped on Nagasaki, and in an instant, everything vaporized. Trees, humans, water, animals—nothing was left. However, in some places, the objects that were vaporized left behind shadows that remained forever. For example, the shadow of a person sitting on the stairs outside the Sumitomo Bank, perhaps waiting for the bank to open, and the shadow of a mother and child embracing each other at the time of the blast. It is said that the latter shadow haunted those who saw it for years, giving them nightmares. The vaporized material rose into the air and came back down as black rain over the next few days. This black, oily, sticky rain is still talked about in Nagasaki's villages, with stories of people who got wet in it developing spots and shadows on their skin that stayed with them for life. A woman named Kaiko Yamamoto, who was a small child at the time, recounts how she and her mother were fleeing the city when the black rain started. The droplets were not cool and soothing but hot and smelling of burning. They covered themselves with scarves and ran blindly, with Kaiko crying and her mother shouting at her not to open her mouth or the poison would get in. They saw the ground emitting a blue light all night, like it was guiding those fleeing. Years later, experts say it could have been Cherenkov radiation, but locals still call it the guiding light. Some of the shadows left behind by those who died faded away after a few years, but others remained intact for many years. People who survived the bombing, known as "hibakusha" in Japanese, say that looking at these shadows made it seem like the owners were still standing there, waiting to be rescued. Some people tried to erase these shadows by washing, rubbing, and scrubbing, but they kept coming back, as if the bomb's radiation had imprinted them deep into the stone. Seeing these shadows and the black rain gives one a sense of how life can be normal one moment and completely changed the next. This is reflected in the words of Dr. Oppenheimer, the father of the atomic bomb, who said, "Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds." This is a tragic reminder of the devastating events of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
