Difference between PPGI, PPGL and PVDF colour coated sheets
Colour coated steel sheets are everywhere — from roofs and façades to signage and appliances. Three terms you’ll see a lot are PPGI, PPGL, and PVDF. They’re related but not interchangeable: PPGI and PPGL describe the metal substrate and its metallic protective coating, while PVDF describes a high-performance paint system applied on top. Understanding how they differ helps you choose the right product for performance, appearance and budget.
What are PPGI and PPGL?
PPGI (Pre-Painted Galvanized Iron) — This is steel (usually cold-rolled) that has been hot-dip galvanized (coated with zinc) and then coil-coated with paint. The zinc layer protects the steel from corrosion; the paint layer gives appearance and additional protection. PPGI is widely used where forming/fabrication is needed (profiles, gutters, roll-forming) and where good corrosion resistance at a reasonable cost is required.
PPGL (Pre-Painted Galvalume / Galvalume®-type) — This is the same coil-coating process but the steel substrate is coated with an aluminium-zinc alloy (commonly known as Galvalume or Zincalume). The aluminium content gives superior barrier protection and heat reflectivity compared with pure zinc, and in many environments PPGL resists corrosion longer than PPGI. These colour coated sheets are preferred for long-life roofing and cladding where corrosion resistance and thermal performance matter.
What is PVDF?
PVDF (Polyvinylidene Fluoride) is not a substrate — it’s a premium paint system. PVDF is a fluoropolymer coating applied to pre-treated steel coils (whether PPGI or PPGL). It is prized for exceptional colour retention, UV resistance, low chalking and long service life. PVDF coatings maintain gloss and colour for many years, making them the go-to choice for high-end architectural façades and projects where long-term aesthetics are critical.
Common paint systems besides PVDF include SMP (silicone modified polyester), HDP (high-durability polyester) and polyester (standard). These are progressively cheaper but generally offer lower color/UV performance than PVDF.

How to choose
- Environment: Coastal or highly corrosive sites — prefer PPGL substrate and consider thicker metallic coating.
- Aesthetics & longevity: For façades, offices, high-visibility projects — prefer PVDF paint for durable colour.
- Budget: For garages, warehouses or budget roofing — PPGI with SMP or polyester may be adequate.
- Fabrication needs: If complex forming is required, check the paint and substrate flexibility and request samples or bend tests.
- Warranty & testing: Review manufacturer warranties (colour and corrosion) and ask about lab tests (UV, salt spray, adhesion).
Installation & maintenance notes
Cutting, drilling and fastening must be done with coated-steel best practices to avoid exposing bare metal at edges. Use compatible fasteners, sealants and ensure proper drainage to prevent ponding. For coastal installations, regular rinsing of salt deposits will extend life.
